- Not long before I wrote this
chapter, Mill Valley California, my home town at the time, declared
itself a ``nuclear weapons-free zone.'' This was devastating to the
local economy, forcing closure of Mill Valley's three plutonium
reprocessing plants, the forty Minuteman silos, and the secret Trident
submarine pens lurking under the physical ægis of Mount
Tamalpais. Mill Valley's subsequent transformation into a
kitschy tourist trap became inevitable.
