Images of Iran

Detail of the dome above the south sanctuary. As in the main dome, note the openwork windows. As you walk toward this room, you'll hear an odd cracking sound echoing through the hallway. The geometry of this dome makes it an echo chamber, and if you stand on a paving stone and stamp your foot (or clap your hands, but stamping appears far more popular), you'll hear multiple sharp echoes back and forth. Everybody does this—you'll sometimes see kids standing in a line awaiting their turn.
