I was, at this time, uninformed and naïve about how a high-profile CEO search operates. In order to protect the careers of the candidates, who are all, after all, important executives in other firms already, and only one of whom will be chosen, it is necessary to maintain very high security during the search process, and this requires that the list of people within the company who get to interview the candidates be severely restricted. This places an even greater burden on the search firm, board members, and senior officers who do interview the candidates to ask the questions and obtain the answers that would result from a broader cross-section of interviewers.
