Music: Delightful Reggae Covers from Vanuatu Band

Listening to the radio while running errands a few days ago, I stumbled upon a remarkable reggae band, Sunshiners, from, of all the sunny places in the tropics, Vanuatu. Most striking are their reggae covers of songs you'd never imagine would work in that genre, such as David Bowie's eighties dance standard, "Modern Love".

If you have access to a Windows machine, you can listen to (but not download) complete recordings of this and two other songs on the Sunshiners' MySpace site. The embedded music player on this site doesn't appear at all in Firefox under Linux (as least as I've configured it). With the Opera browser on Linux, the player appears just fine, but when you try to play one of the songs, it hangs in the “connecting…” stage—sigh.

Their first album will be released in France on June 19th. You can audition snippets of the tracks (which works on any system, including Linux, for which RealPlayer is available) and pre-order, if you like what you hear, from Amazon.fr. The band's Web site, which until very recently has been a place-holder, is still under construction and in a pretty rough state.
