This 1/125 second exposure captured the moment the photosphere (visible disc of the sun) began to emerge from behind the Moon. Prominences and the inner corona remain visible, but vanished in the glare of the Sun an instant later. The burst of light just as the photosphere is covered or re-emerges is called the “diamond ring” effect.
