Directional fragmentation mines use a shaped charge which directs the explosive force in one direction. The U.S. M18 Claymore mine, which contains 700 steel balls and is lethal at ranges up to 50 metres, has the helpful legend “This side toward enemy” molded into the business end.

These mines are usually triggered by trip wires, and are often used in ambush situations.
